Although open to anyone, these two training programs are targeted at veterinarians wanting to provide services to the fish farming industry. The Basic Fish Health Medicine Program consists of 5 online modules (4.5 continuing education hours) covering topics such as Water Quality, Risk Management, Fish Health Inspections, and Veterinary Health Assessments.
The authors and expert reviewers for this program strongly recommended that a hands-on field training be taken to complete your training in fish health medicine before performing Fish Health Inspections and Veterinary Health Assessments of fish. The Complete Fish Health Medicine Certificate Program, then, has the same 5 online modules but also includes a day spent on a fish farm with a fish health expert practicing what you’ve learned (a total of 9 continuing education hours).
When you’ve completed the Basic Fish Health Medicine Program you will be able to print a certificate of completion for the online modules. If you’ve completed the Complete Fish Health Medicine Certificate Program (including the field training) you’ll receive a Certificate in Fish Health Medicine. In Wisconsin, this Certificate qualifies veterinarians to work with fish farmers on a variety of fish health issues, as well as complete Fish Health Inspections and Veterinary Health Assessments of fish, both strategies for risk management in aquaculture. If you are not from Wisconsin you should check with your state veterinarian to see if either the Basic or the Complete Program is accepted as all or part of the veterinary training required to qualify you to work with fish farmers and do Fish Health Inspections in your state.
This is a rapidly changing and exciting area of veterinary specialization.
We hope you will enjoy this course and your future work with fish farmers.
